Leaving the city center at 9:00am you’ll spend the day exploring the sites of Bali’s southeast coast including Batubulan, Celuk, Batuan, Mas and Goa Gajah. First stop is the cultural show presented at Batubulan village’s Barong & Kris dance. While the dance can be up to two hours long guests often comment that it’s an enjoyable way to establish context for Balinese culture at the beginning of your time on the island. While in Batubulan, you’ll enjoy a visit to the Bali Bird Park where you can interact with many of the 250 species of exotic birds from around the world in their protected habitats. While it’s not obvious from the name, there are also reptiles at the park; be sure not to miss the awesome Komodo Dragons! As the tour progresses south toward the east coast you’ll visit Celuk, which is Bali’s center of creativity for master silversmiths and goldsmiths. Watch the masters at work and see how their intricate designs come to life out of formless lumps of metal. Ask Oka about tips to choose quality jewelry during your stay in Bali; not all jewelry is created equal so it helps to know what to look for when considering purchases. At Batuan you’ll see the local art style in their distinctive paintings. Ask Oka to point some out for you. There’s a few well known art galleries here to stop in; if you would like to see more of this local style. Another of the local sites here is the sacred Hindu Puseh Batuan Temple, reportedly almost 1000 years old. Later in Mas village you’ll find Bali’s Wood-Carving Center. Many of Bali’s villages are well known for excelling at different art mediums; Mas just happens to be home to some of the best mask-makers, sculptors and wood carvers on the island. There are many artistic treasures to be found there. The last stop on the tour is at the famous 9th century Goa Gajah Elephant Cave Temple. The demons carved into the cave entrance ward off evil spirits while inside the temple is carved out an elaborate ritual bathing area.
